- Must do in Berlin
Berlin is one of the most influential centers in European politics, culture and science. The city serves as an important hub of continental transportation and is home to some of the most prominent universities, sport events, orchestras and museums. Its economy is based on the service sector, encompassing a diverse range of media and life science corporations, convention venues, research institutes, and creative industries.
Berlin is the capital city and one of the sixteen states of the Federal Republic of Germany. It is the heart of the Berlin- Brandenburg metropolitan region, located in northeastern Germany. With a population of 3.4 million, Berlin is the country‘s largest city, and the second most populous city in the European Union.
Berlin is located in eastern Germany, about 110 kilometers (65 miles) west of the border with Poland. The rapidly evolving metropolis enjoys an international reputation for its festivals, contemporary architecture, nightlife and avant-garde arts. Being a major tourist center and home to people from over 180 nations, Berlin is a focal point for individuals who are attracted by its liberal lifestyle, urban eclecticism and artistic freedom.
First documented in the 13th century, Berlin became successively the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia (from 1701), the German Empire), the Weimar Republic) and the Third Reich). After World War II, the city was divided. East Berlin became the capital of the GDR (East Germany), while West Berlin remained a West German enclave surrounded by the Berlin Wall from. Following the reunification in 1990, the city regained its status as the capital of all Germany.
Capital of the largest country in Europe, Berlin is a city that has outgrown its past to emerge as a vibrant, adaptive and wholly modern metropolitan centre. Steeped in rich cultural history, art and architecture, Berlin stays true to its character as an artistic hub, and continues to impress with its theatre, cinema and galleries par excellence. An enviable array of bars, restaurants, and night haunts drive its reputation as a social as well as cultural and political influence, and its wealth, clearly evidenced by the enviable selection of high-end shops and exclusive boutiques, is evident throughout.
In contrast to many of the crowded medieval cities of Europe, Berlin is a very open city, a third of its populated area being given over to parks, gardens and lakes, and it is permeated by a welcome sense of space. Though it must be said that the last century has not been kind to Berlin, with its eclectic mixture of antiquity, grandeur and modern trendsetting, it undoubtedly remains one of the great European cities.

GETTING AROUND
From the Airport…
Taxis and limousines are readily available and standard, and the ride into the city centre will likely cost around EUR 30. As Berlin’s main airport, Tegel is relatively central, frequent buses connect conveniently to the nearby underground system at Kurt-Schumacher-Platz and Jakob-Kaiser-Platz where you can continue the journey by train; alternatively the same buses carry on to Unter den Linden (Branderburger Gate) and Kurfurstendamm respectively.
Around Town…
Taxis in Berlin are commonplace and reasonably priced, and they can be hailed easily from most locations throughout the city. The Berlin underground (U-Bahn) and the integrated overland (S-Bahn) systems are typically efficient and, being surprisingly spacious and safe, present a cheap and convenient alternative to road travel, particularly during the rush hour traffic. Though Berlin is a very spacious city that prides itself on open expanses and grand streets, walking around the centre is still a pleasant way to see its varied buildings and landmarks.
WHEN TO GO
Visitors come all year round to Berlin due to the amount on offer. In the summer months (May - September) the weather stays consistently pleasant, with average highs of 22C and average lows of 11C. If you'd rather visit without the summer crowds and don't mind the cold (highs of 10C and lows of -3), then visit at Christmas to see a city famous at this time of year for its culture, winter markets and festive spirits.
